Let’s be honest.

Starting a sustainable lifestyle is no easy task.

If you google “sustainable living”, you get several results saying:

  • “25+ways to start a sustainable lifestyle”,
  • “7 tips to begin sustainable living”,
  • “Guide to sustainable living”,
  • and more. . .

All are valid and helpful. However, in the beginning, it may be daunting to see that there is so much to do.

I suggest you answer the following question as your first step.

What do you actually care about?

There are many ways to lead a sustainable lifestyle. You can save energy, reduce your food waste, shop green, etc.

In the next 24 hours, go about your day, and see what you actually care about.

What actions catch your attention while at home?

  • Did you pause when you threw away food?
  • Did you pause when you changed the temperature at your home?
  • Did you pause when you saw the word “organic” on a food label?

Which ads catch your attention?

There are also many ads around us about sustainability. In the past:

  • Did you pause when you heard statistics about rising sea levels?
  • Did you pause when you found out clothes may have been produced through child labor?
  • Did you pause when you found out there may be harmful ingredients in your deodorant or other personal care products?

What would you like to learn more about?

Committing to a sustainable lifestyle also takes effort to research and become educated on several topics. But start slow:

  • Does learning more about energy consumption interest you?
  • Does learning about the textile supply chain interest you?
  • Does learning about water usage interest you?

Takeaways:

When deciding to switch to a sustainable lifestyle answer the question:

What do you actually care about?

  • by checking what catches your attention while you are at home, which ads about sustainability catch your attention and what you would like to learn more about.

I hope this inspires you to make your transition to sustainable living one step at a time.
